In 2021 Klima received 446,608 EUR in total offset contributions. In this Spending and Impact Report, we document how Klima has allocated these funds and how much impact they created.

Before we dive in, here are two core principles about the way we run Klima:

No profits from offsets

Klima does not take out any profits from users’ offset subscriptions. All funds are invested into creating climate impact as detailed below. That means zero percent spent on investor returns and shareholder dividends, 100% spent on quantifiable climate impact.

Holistic offsetting approach

Carbon offsetting is a powerful tool for individuals to mitigate the immediate effects of personal greenhouse gas emissions. But individual action can not solve the climate crisis as long as it lacks a collective framework. And offsetting alone is not a sustainable strategy unless combined with long term emissions reduction.

That’s why Klima follows a holistic approach towards carbon offsetting, that combines 1) individual, 2) collective, and 3) sustainable impact. This report details the spending and impact achieved across each of these categories.

1. Individual Impact - offsetting emissions

In 2021, neutralizing Klima users’ individual carbon emissions accounted for 70% of all user contributions. This was also exactly the ratio we aimed for. These funds planted trees, built solar panels and provided low emission cookstoves to families and small businesses. Altogether, almost 45 thousand tons of CO2e have been avoided or captured from the atmosphere, directly compensating the individual carbon footprints of each and every Klima member.

| 70% | 312,626 EUR went into buying carbon offsets credits from our climate projects. These contributions were split across: • 40% nature-based solutions • 33% tech-based solutions • 27% social impact solutions

But if we stopped here, we would fail to address a systemic element of the climate crisis: nobody can solve it alone. There are no island solutions. Our individual action becomes truly meaningful when we are many.

2. Collective Impact - Growing a movement
